The Ford Escort was designed by Larry Wood. It is based on the first-generation North American Ford Escort, a very popular and common compact car of the 1980s.
The casting was first released in 1983 in the mainline series, which corresponds to model 3288 with Blackwall (BW) wheels.
This casting often came with a plastic accessory piece on the roof, representing either a sunroof or a luggage rack. The initial release was in white with red and orange side stripes. It was an example of Hot Wheels producing everyday, relatable vehicles.
It fits in with other compact "economy car" castings of the early 80s, such as the Chevy Citation and the Dodge Omni 024.
Besides the white debut version, it was also released in yellow and red. The color of the plastic roof accessory could also vary.
