The Boss Hoss was designed by Ira Gilford. It is based on the 1970 Ford Mustang Boss 302, but with chrome-plated engine and exhaust components, a feature of the "Spoilers" series.
The Boss Hoss was released in 1970 as part of the "Spoilers" series. All cars in this series featured oversized engines and were based on American muscle cars. This model was produced in 1970 and 1971 and came with Redline (RL) wheels.
A unique aspect of the Spoilers series was the exposed, chrome-plated engine and exhaust system that was part of the car's base, protruding through the hood. The Boss Hoss casting also featured a rear wing and a chin spoiler. Early versions had a painted black rear spoiler, which was later left unpainted.
This casting is part of the "Spoilers" series, which also included the "King Kuda" and "Heavy Chevy." It is a modified version of a stock '70 Mustang casting and is distinct from other Hot Wheels Boss 302 models released in later years.
The Boss Hoss was produced in various Spectraflame colors, with blue and green being common. The color of the interior could also vary. U.S. and Hong Kong-produced versions have slight casting differences.
