Model History

Designer and Inspiration:

The Custom Corvette was designed by Harry Bentley Bradley. Based on the 1968 Chevrolet "Mako Shark" Corvette, it is one of the most famous of the "Original 16" Hot Wheels cars.

Historical Context and Production Years:

As one of the first Hot Wheels cars released in 1968, it was produced from 1968 to 1969 with Redline (RL) wheels.

Unique Aspects:

This casting is famous for being one of the first Hot Wheels ever produced. Early versions featured a distinct separation line in the rear window, creating a "split-window" look that was not on the real 1968 Corvette, a feature that was later removed from the mold. It has an opening hood.

Similar Castings:

Part of the "Original 16," it's the first Corvette ever made by Hot Wheels. It set the stage for dozens of future Corvette castings.

Variations and Special Editions:

It was produced in nearly every Spectraflame color. The very first run of cars produced at the California factory are considered prototypes and are extremely rare. The most sought-after variation is the one with the "split-window" rear.
