The Custom Volkswagen was designed by Ira Gilford. Based on the Volkswagen Beetle, it is one of the "Original 16" Hot Wheels from 1968.
Released in 1968, it was produced with Redline (RL) wheels until 1969.
This casting is notable for its opening sunroof and twin exhaust pipes. Early versions produced in Hong Kong do not have plastic side windows, while U.S. versions do. The sunroof panel can be found in different colors. The casting was modified several times during its production run.
This was the first VW Beetle from Hot Wheels and the predecessor to many others, including the famous "Baja Bug."
It was produced in all Spectraflame colors. The Hong Kong "no-window" version is a significant variation. It was re-tooled in 2003 for collectors.
