The Mighty Maverick was designed by Howard Rees. It is based on the 1969 Ford Maverick, a popular American compact car.
It was first released in 1970 and came with Redline (RL) wheels. Model 7653 is a later model number, but the car originated in the Redline era.
The Mighty Maverick is famous among collectors for an early error. The base was initially engraved with the car's pre-production name, "Mad Maverick." This was quickly corrected, making the "Mad Maverick" base versions extremely rare and valuable. The casting features an exposed engine and a rear wing.
It is a compact muscle car, similar in spirit to the "Gremlin Grinder" or "Poison Pinto" from a few years later.
The "Mad Maverick" base is the most significant variation. It was produced in many Spectraflame colors, with blue and green being common.
