The Alive '55 was co-designed by Larry Wood and Bob Rosas. It is based on a 1955 Chevrolet Bel Air, heavily modified in the "Gasser" drag racing style popular in the 1960s and 70s.
The Alive '55 was first released in 1977 as part of the "Super Chromes" series. Cars in this series featured a brilliant chrome-plated finish. The initial release came with Redline (RL) wheels.
The casting's most striking feature is its chrome-plated body. It has a "Gasser" stance with a raised front end, a massive exposed engine with velocity stacks, and large rear tires. The name "Alive '55" is a playful take on the phrase "Still Alive" and its model year.
This is a modified version of the standard '55 Chevy casting. It is often compared to other Hot Wheels "Gasser" style cars, such as the '55 Chevy Gasser casting released much later, which became immensely popular.
The original 1977 release was all chrome. Later versions in the "Super Chromes" series had colored stripes (red, white, and blue) added. It was re-released in 2005 in the "Real Riders" series and again in 2012.
