The Custom AMX was designed by Ira Gilford. It is based on the 1968 AMC AMX, a two-seat muscle car from American Motors Corporation.
The Custom AMX was released in 1969 and was produced with Redline (RL) wheels until 1971.
The casting features an opening hood. U.S.-produced versions are typically found in various Spectraflame colors, while Hong Kong versions are often seen in enamel colors, which is unusual for that era. The U.S. version has a clear windshield, while the Hong Kong version is blue-tinted. There are also differences in the grille and interior design between the two production locations.
This was the only two-seat American muscle car from the era, making the casting unique. It was a contemporary of other 1969 releases like the Custom Continental and the Chaparral 2G.
Spectraflame colors for the U.S. version include blue, aqua, and green. A rare version was produced for the Jack in the Box restaurant chain. Enamel colors for the Hong Kong version include orange and red.
