The Classic Cobra was designed by Larry Wood. It is based on the legendary AC Cobra, specifically the 427 S/C (Semi-Competition) model, a high-performance Anglo-American sports car famous for its raw power.
This casting was first released in 1983. The model number 14014 corresponds to a "Real Riders" series release from that year. This casting is distinct from the earlier "Custom Cobra" designed by Harry Bradley.
The casting features a metal body and base, giving it a solid feel. The 1983 Real Riders version came in metalflake silver with red and blue racing stripes over the top. Its defining characteristic is the rubber Real Riders tires, which have "GOOD YEAR" lettering in white, mounted on chrome 5-spoke wheels. It also features detailed side pipes.
This is one of several Cobra castings by Hot Wheels. It is more accurately proportioned than the original 1968 "Custom Cobra." It is also different from the "Cobra 289" and the more modern "Shelby Cobra 427 S/C" castings.
The initial mainline release in 1983 was red. It has been a very popular casting, released in dozens of color and tampo variations over the years, including a spot in the 1997 Treasure Hunt series.
