The Mercedes-Benz 280SL was designed by Ira Gilford. It is based on the classic W113 "Pagoda" Mercedes-Benz 280SL, a highly regarded German luxury sports car.
It was first released in 1969 and produced with Redline (RL) wheels until 1971.
The casting features an opening hood and a very detailed grille with the three-pointed star emblem. It accurately captures the elegant lines of the real car. U.S. and Hong Kong versions have different interior and grille designs.
It was one of the first European luxury sports cars in the Hot Wheels lineup, a contemporary of the Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow.
It was produced in many Spectraflame colors, with blue being very common. A version with a black painted roof exists.
