The Hare Splitter was designed by Larry Wood. It is based on a Volkswagen Rabbit (or Golf Mk1), heavily modified in the "pro stock" drag racing style.
The casting debuted in 1979. Model 2504 with Blackwall (BW) wheels is from that first year.
Applying the extreme pro stock look to a small, front-wheel-drive economy car was a unique concept. The casting features a massive V8 engine where the back seats would be, and the rear hatch opens to reveal it.
It is part of the pro stock family, along with the "Greased Gremlin" and "Flat Out 442." It's one of the few compact cars to get this treatment.
The first release in 1979 was typically metallic brown or green. It was released in several other colors during its production run.
