Model History

Designer and Inspiration:

The Blown Camaro was designed by Larry Wood. It's based on the third-generation Chevrolet Camaro (1982-1992), heavily modified in a "pro street" drag racing style.

Historical Context and Production Years:

This casting debuted in 1989. The model 5901 corresponds to a 1990 promotional release for Getty gasoline, which came with Blackwall (BW) wheels.

Unique Aspects:

The casting's most dominant feature is the massive, supercharged ("blown") engine sticking out of the hood. It also has a narrowed rear axle with huge rear tires tucked under the bodywork, characteristic of pro street cars. The Getty promotional version was typically white with Getty logos.

Similar Castings:

Hot Wheels has made many third-generation Camaro castings, including the stock '82 Camaro Z28. The "Blown Camaro" is the most aggressively modified version of this body style.

Variations and Special Editions:

The initial 1989 mainline release was metallic blue. It has been produced in many colors over the years. The Getty version is a notable promotional release. It was also released as a "Color Shifter," which changed color in water.
